The Benefits of Sustainable Tourism: How Eco Beach Resorts are Making a Difference

Sustainable tourism is becoming increasingly popular as travellers become more aware of the impact their trips can have on the environment. Over 80% of travellers confirm that sustainable tourism is important to them.

Eco beach resorts are leading the way in sustainable tourism by implementing environmentally friendly practices that reduce waste, conserve natural resources, and support local communities.

At Eco Beach Resort, we are committed to providing the ultimate holiday experience while also caring for the environment.

What is Sustainable Tourism?

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council defines sustainable tourism as “sustainable practices in and by the tourism industry”. Sustainable tourism aims to leave a positive impact on the land, advocate for sustainability, benefit local communities, and encourage others to join in supporting and preserving the environment.

What is Eco-Tourism?

According to The Global Ecotourism Network (GEN), ecotourism is defined as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and creates knowledge and understanding through interpretation and education of all involved (visitors, staff and the visited).”

Organizations such as Tourism Australia and Ecotourism Australia aim to promote and support sustainable travel by offering certification programs and ecotourism education.

Ecotourism Australia (EA) is a non-government, internationally recognised, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting ecotourism. Offering an ECO Certification program, Ecotourism Australia offers sustainable tourism certification for products, tours, attractions, accommodations, and businesses.

This certification program helps travellers choose products and destinations that prioritise eco-tourism. Eco Beach Resort is proud to be recognised by Ecotourism Australia. Our ecotourism resort is featured in Ecotourism Australia’s Green Travel Guide, the ultimate resource for travelling sustainably.

How Eco Beach Resorts Are Making a Difference

Many eco-beach resorts in Broome are implementing sustainable practices that support ecotourism by reducing waste, supporting local communities, and conserving resources.

While Australia’s extreme and unpredictable weather patterns can present challenges when it comes to implementing sustainable practices, many resorts have risen to the occasion.

From design to construction to daily operations, sustainable tourism is a top consideration in every aspect of Eco Beach Resort.

Here’s a look at our ecotourism journey:

Accommodations — Each of our self-sustaining eco villas are equipped with energy-saving appliances and cleaned without harsh chemicals. Showers feature water-saving shower heads to reduce water consumption. To learn more about how eco villas combine sustainability and luxury tourism experiences, check out Eco Structures.

Recycling and Waste — We minimise waste wherever possible and prioritise recycling. Eco Beach Wilderness Retreat also participates in the Containers for Change program. Single-use plastics are minimized by only using refillable bottles rather than single-use toiletries.

The Construction — Many of our Eco Villas and Tents have been designed on stumps to allow the surroundings to continue to thrive and decrease the impact on the environment. Our resort features over 1km of boardwalks that have been made from recycled composite eco decking, allowing guests to move around the resort comfortably while also protecting the surrounding landscape and native plants.

The Resort — Each of our Eco Villas features solar panels and solar battery storage to keep the resort powered with clean, renewable energy day and night. Eco Beach Wilderness Retreat Planted has also planted over 11,000 native trees to help preserve and restore the natural landscape. We also installed a greywater sewerage system that waters the plants and grass.

Activities — We offer a range of ways to explore and enjoy the gorgeous Broome environment. Our land-based and cultural-enriching experiences are planned with ecotourism in mind. We practice sustainable fishing measures, honour cultural history and traditions, and pay attention to our environmental impact. Eco Beach only allows resort cars to access the beach and bush tracks to reduce our environmental presence.

Our Restaurant — Along with sourcing local ingredients to support locally owned businesses, Eco Beach features fresh-grown produce in some of our menu offerings. We also reduce single-use bottled water consumption by having sparkling or filtered water on tap.
