Broome is known for many things, but its beaches are world-famous.
When I first visited Broome, the striking contrast of the sugary white sand against the vibrant blue waters of the Indian Ocean instantly captivated me.
Here, I’ll share some of the best beaches around Broome and the Kimberley, including insider tips on each spot.
8 of the Best Beaches in Broome
Cable Beach
- Location: Cable Beach Road West, Cable Beach – 10 minutes from Broome
- Facilities: Cafe, Carpark, Coach Parking, Picnic Area, Public Toilet, Restaurant
- Best for: Four Wheel Driving, Fishing, Sailing, Snorkelling, Swimming
- Family-Friendly: Yes
Cable Beach is perhaps the most famous and talked about of the many available, noteable for stunning sunsets over the Indian Ocean. With shades of orange, pink and purple, these are something you shouldn’t miss!
Perhaps most well known for the camel trails that are seen daily, this iconic beach is one that you should add to your bucket list. While it may bear the name of the telegraph cable that linked Australia’s north-west to the global network in 1889, this tropical haven invites you to unwind from daily life while discovering 22 kilometers of sun-soaked coastline.
Roebuck Bay
- Location: Port Drive, Minyirr, 10-minute drive from Broome Caravan Park
- Facilities: Cafe, picnic area, parking
- Best for: Bird watching, wildlife encounters, exploring
- Family-Friendly: Yes
Arguably the most beautiful beach in Broome, Roebuck Bay features one of the most vibrant collections of colours on the planet.
Think of vast stretches of fiery red-orange sand, vivid green mangroves, and impossibly turquoise water immersing you in nature’s brightest colours.
With its proximity to the Broome Bird Observatory, Roebuck Bay is an ideal beach for bird lovers who want to catch a glimpse of migratory birds. Lucky visitors also have the chance to spot various wildlife, including the Australian snubfin dolphin.
Gantheaume Beach
- Location: Lurujarri Walk off Gantheaume Point Road, about a 10-minute drive from Broome’s city centre
- Facilities: Parking, a one-per-day public bus that transports visitors to Gantheaume Point
- Best for: Beach walks, families, dinosaur enthusiasts, exploring
- Family-Friendly: Yes, I’d say it’s one of the most family-friendly Broome beaches on the list
Head to Gantheaume Beach for the turquoise waters and red sands Broome is famous for. Located near Gantheaume Point, this breathtaking landscape also offers visitors a chance to head over and check for prehistoric plant fossils and dinosaur footprints at low tide.
With its long stretches of firm white sand, it’s a popular spot for beach walkers and beach driving.
Reddell Beach
- Location: Car Park 3, Kavite Road (unsealed but typically suitable for a 2WD vehicle as long as there hasn’t been heavy rain), 15 min drive from Broome Caravan Park
- Facilities: Parking
- Best for: Nature lovers seeking solitude and tranquillity, sunbathing, sunset viewing
- Family-Friendly: Yes but not as much as other beaches on this list
If immersing yourself in nature is your goal, I highly recommend a visit to Reddell Beach.
This secluded beach is a local favourite and you’ll see why when you soak in the striking red bluffs, pristine sand, and bright blue water surrounding you.
Reddell Beach has a way of making you feel like you are in the middle of the wilderness when you’re actually just 8 km outside of Broome’s centre. This secluded beach is undeveloped yet easily accessible.
This untouched coastline surrounds visitors with intricate, captivating rock formations and picturesque pindan cliffs.
While you can walk the 1.7 km stretch of beach to the north end to hunt for dinosaur footprints at low tide, I recommend Gantheaume Point for a safer, more accessible option.
Entrance Point
- Location: Kabbarli Road, 15-minute drive from Broome Caravan Park
- Facilities: Two boat ramps, ample parking, Broome Fishing Club
- Best for: Fishing, boating, sunrise and sunset viewing
- Family-Friendly: Entrance Point is family-friendly and dog-friendly too
With two boat ramps and plenty of parking, Entrance Point is popular among fishing enthusiasts and boaters.
It also features unique, stunning rock formations and proximity to Broome’s city centre.
I highly recommend this spot for breathtaking sunrise and sunset viewing! With the Broome Fishing Club right here, grab an order of fish and chips when you work up an appetite!
Note: This popular beach can get busy at times, so if you’re looking for privacy, you may want to opt for #5 (James Price Point) and #7 (Coconut Well) on our list instead.
James Price Point
- Location: Manari Road, Kimbolton, 52 km north of Broome (about a 65 min drive from Broome Caravan Park with some unsealed portions of road)
- Facilities: None
- Best for: Wilderness enthusiasts looking to get off the beaten path, wildlife watching, exploring
- Family-Friendly: Yes
James Price Point is the furthest drive of any beaches on our list, but it is well worth it. This incredible beach boasts seclusion, vibrant colours, and some of the best views of the Dampier Peninsula.
This is a great spot for couples looking for a romantic afternoon on the beach or for families looking for a fun-filled day trip. Kids love splashing in the rock pools and watching for a glimpse of manta rays, turtles, dolphins, and whales.
Town Beach
- Location: Just a few minutes drive from the city centre
- Facilities: Excellent facilities, including ample parking, bathrooms, and a water play area for kids
- Best for: Exploring, sunbathing, viewing Broome’s Staircase to the Moon
- Family-Friendly: Yes – this is my pick for the most family-friendly Broome beach
Town Beach is an amazing spot for families, couples, and history buffs. With its proximity to the town’s centre, visitors are close to all of Broome’s rich pearling history.
History lovers also have the exciting chance to spot wreckage from the flying boats of WWII at low tide (less than 0.86m). Preserved by mud, these boat wrecks are revealed at low tide and can be reached by walking about a kilometre across the Roebuck Bay mud flats.
If you’re feeling adventurous, bring along grippy shoes and carefully head out on the exposed seabed at low tide. Along with observing tiny marine creatures in the rock pools, visitors can view remnants from flying boat wrecks.
For extensive information on how to see the flying boat wrecks in Roebuck Bay, the Broome Visitor Centre created this excellent resource: Broome’s Catalina WWII Flying Boat Wrecks.
Town Beach is also a favourite among kids and families thanks to its excellent facilities, including a playground and water play area on the foreshore.
Families can also relax in one of the large grassy picnic areas or grab a quick bite from the nearby café. After a day filled with sand, sun, and fresh air, families can enjoy Broome’s courthouse markets on Thursdays!
Coconut Well
- Location: 15 km north of Broome
- Facilities: None
- Best for: Sunbathing, couples, exploring
- Family-Friendly: This is the least family-friendly Broome Beach on our list due to accessibility and lack of facilities… but a wonderful spot for couples or solo adventurers!
Last on our list but arguably one of the most beautiful stretches of beach in Broome is Coconut Well. It’s hard to find a more stunning, picturesque stretch of beach than this.
This hidden gem is only reachable by a 4WD-only access road. After that, hike over towering sand dunes to reach this secluded stretch of shoreline.
When the tide recedes, numerous rock pools filled with stunning turquoise water are revealed. Floating lazily in Mother Nature’s bathtubs is an amazing way to rejuvenate the body and soul.
Beach Essentials Checklist
Get the most out of your Broome beach trip with these essentials:
- Sand-resistant towels
- Plenty of water
- Swimsuits and coverups
- Beach blanket
- Beach chairs
- Snorkel and goggles
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- Sandals or water shoes
- Nylon or mesh beach bag
- Cooler
- Snacks
- Sun-protective clothing
- Beach umbrella or beach tent for a spot to take a break in the shade
- Sunglasses
- Wide brimmed sun hat

Beach Safety Tips
Along with packing beach essentials, it is imperative to understand and respect the tides. As gorgeous as Broome’s beaches are, the ocean is unforgiving and unpredictable.
Always check the tides and local weather conditions before beach trips and be aware that many beaches have no lifeguard on duty. Adhere to all beach warning signs and never swim during a beach closure.
Also, be aware that if you choose to swim during Broome’s wet season from November to April, it is advised to wear a stinger suit in case of an encounter with Box jellyfish or Irukandji jellyfish.
